Beginnings
The firm was founded by Richard B. “Dick” Stone, who grew up in
Swannanoa. After graduating
from Swannanoa High School in 1942 he enlisted in the Army.
He served until 1946 in the European Theater and achieved the
rank of Captain in the Infantry, earning the Combat Infantry Badge,
Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, and three Battle
Stars. He was honorably
discharged at the grand old age of 21.
He returned to serve in the Korean War for six months.
After the war Dick attended Wake Forest College and School of Law
and graduated in 1952 with his Law degree.
After a brief stint in Washington, DC working for the government,
he returned to Black Mountain to practic
In 1959 Dick was a recipient for the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award for Black Mountain and Asheville as Man of the Year. He also served as President of the Young Democrats and the Black Mountain Jaycees, was a founder of the Swannanoa Medical Center, served as Chairman of the local school committee, and as chairman of the first Booster Club for Owen High School. Dick served as Mayor of Black Mountain for 18 years, from 1957 to 1975. During his leadership there were many changes in the size of the Town and Town government. While Mayor, Dick served as Town Attorney, pro bono, and did the same for numerous churches and charitable organizations. Dick died in 1998, and his presence is still felt. He is remembered to this day for his quick wit, his laughter and his love of Black Mountain. His small town, common sense oriented approach to legal problems is admired and remembered by many clients, and his example of community service and care for his clients remains an ideal for the firm to this day. Dick’s wife Muriel, his six surviving children and numerous grand children all reside in the area and are active in many community organizations. Current Dick
Stone was joined by Bill Christy in 1995, and in 1996 they formed the
firm of Stone & Christy. After
Dick’s death in 1998, the firm changed locations and gradually
expanded to its current formulation.
When the firmed moved to its current location in 1999 current
paralegals Donna Farr and Rebecca Stroud were already employed by the
firm. Bryant Webster joined
the firm in 2000 followed by James Ellis in 2001 and Walton Davis in
2003. Current staff members
Carrie Maresh and Amelia Ledford joined the firm in 2007.
We believe that offering maximum training opportunities for staff
and the retention of staff help further the firm’s goals of providing excellent
service to clients while remaining accessible to those clients to the
greatest extent possible. Part of the culture of Stone & Christy is taking seriously the obligation of all attorneys to ensure the administration of justice to all in our society. All of the attorneys at Stone & Christy are actively involved in the provision of pro bono legal services to low income clients through various programs of Pisgah Legal Services, including the Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyers program and the Attorney Hot Line. The efforts of the firm were recognized by the North Carolina Bar Association in 2006 when it awarded the firm the Small Firm Pro Bono Award.
